(ToC) 1.5 Where Is This FAQ Stored? ----------------------------- The most updated version of this FAQ is under the main FHY directory of fhy ftp site. File name: fhy.faq uwalpha.uwinnipeg.ca or cnd.org: pub/fcssc/fhy/HELP/fhy.faq This file can also be retrieved by sending a one-line command help fhy-faq to listserv@uwalpha.uwinnipeg.ca (ToC) 1.6 What Do FCSSC, CSSA, CSSP, and LYH Stand for? ------------------------------------------------- FCSSC: Federation of Chinese Students and Scholars in Canada CSSA: Chinese Students and Scholars Association CSSP: Chinese Students, Scholars, and Professionals LYH: Lian Yi Hui in Chinese pinyin (ToC) 2. Chinese Software Related (ToC) 2.1 Without Chinese Software, Am I Able to Read FHY? ---------------------------------------------------- Yes, if you know how to view/display or print ordinary PostScript files. FHY PS (PostScript) version is for printing purpose with some artistic design. You may view FHY PS version with "pageview" in OpenWindow on Sun WorkStation, or "ghostscript" or "ghostview" on many workstations. Or you can view it via WWW. You may also print FHY PS file on a PS laser printer. The printing time ranges from a few minutes through 30 minutes, depending on the speed of your laser printer. (ToC) 2.2 What Is the Simplest Chinese Software for Beginners to Start? ------------------------------------------------------------------ For beginners, we recommend BYX1.1 for your viewing/editing GB on PC, ChiRK for viewing GB/BIG5/HZ on Unix workstation. ftp site: ftp.ifcss.org[128.123.1.55]:pub/software/dos/editor filename: byx11edt.zip byx11edt.doc ftp site: ftp.ifcss.org[128.123.1.55]:pub/software/unix/viewer filename: ChiRK-1.2a.readme ChiRK-1.2a.tar.gz (ToC) 2.3 Where Can I Get the Related Chinese Softwares? -------------------------------------------------- A popular ftp site is "ftp.ifcss.org", under directory "pub/software". Mailing List Related (ToC) 3.1 Is Subscription to FHY Free? -------------------------------- Yes, it's free of charge. (ToC) 3.2 How to Sign On (Subscribe To) FHY Lists? -------------------------------------------- To subscribe to FHY magazine, please send an email to one of the following addresses: versions E-Mail address one line message in the mail body --------------------------------------------------------------------------- GB: listserv@cunews.carleton.ca SUBSCRIBE FHY-GB Your Name or listserv@[134.117.1.42] HZ: listserv@uwalpha.uwinnipeg.ca SUBSCRIBE FHY-HZ Your Name BIG5: listserv@uwalpha.uwinnipeg.ca SUBSCRIBE FHY-BIG5 Your Name or listserv@[142.132.12.100] PS: listserv@uwalpha.uwinnipeg.ca SUBSCRIBE FHY-PS Your Name -------------------------------------------------------------------------- (ToC) 3.3 How to Sign Off (Unsubscribe From) FHY Lists ----------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe to FHY magazine, please send an email to one of the following addresses: versions E-Mail address one line message in the mail body --------------------------------------------------------------------------- GB: listserv@cunews.carleton.ca UNSUBSCRIBE FHY-GB or listserv@[134.117.1.42] HZ: listserv@uwalpha.uwinnipeg.ca UNSUBSCRIBE FHY-HZ BIG5: listserv@uwalpha.uwinnipeg.ca UNSUBSCRIBE FHY-BIG5 or listserv@[142.132.12.100] PS: listserv@uwalpha.uwinnipeg.ca UNSUBSCRIBE FHY-PS -------------------------------------------------------------------------- (ToC) 3.4 How to Change My Email Addresses on FHY Lists -------------------------------------------------- Use the combination of the above: sign off from your old account, then sign on the list from your new account. (ToC) 3.5 When Signed on FHY HZ to listserv@ucalgary.ca, I Got an Error Msg, Why? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The list of CSSADS-L in the site of listserv@ucalgary.ca is the old list name. The new HZ list processor is in listserv@uwalpha.uwinnipeg.ca as "FHY-HZ". Please try again. (ToC) 3.6 As A FHY gb/hz Subscriber, I Did Not Receive Last Issue, Why? ----------------------------------------------------------------- First you may want to know if you are still on the list. To do so, you may unsub the list from the account you sent your sub request. If the ack from the listserv says your name does not appear on the list, then indeed you are not on. In either case, resub to the list. If your host was down during last fhy release, the fhy issue sent to you could get lost. Or after seeing an issue bounced back from your machine, your subscription was removed by our list maintainer. You simply sign on again. You could report your problem to us if you haven't got fhy for long period. For temporary arrangement, you can get FHY from fhy ftp site. (ToC) 3.7 I Can't Read the Received/Fetched FHY, but I Can Read Other CMs, Why? ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Technically, FHY is no different from other CMs when delivering gb and hz versions to its subscribers. If you receive GB version from fhy-gb list, what you received is a uuencoded ascii file. You need to convert it to binary gb file with variety of uudecoders, such as 'uudecode' on Unix machine, 'uud' on PC, ... Then use your gb viewer/editor to view the fhy gb version. If you get fhy##.gb from the ftp site, you should view it directly without going through uudecoding. If you receive HZ version from cssads-l list, you view it with your hz viewer. There is no uudecoding step involved. Last, when you download a fhy file - from the ftp site to your host machine, and/or - from your host machine to your PC at home you need to set transfer mode correctly according to the file type, fhy##.gb binary fhy##.bg5 binary fhy##.uue ascii fhy##.hz ascii fhy##.ps.Z binary or it may cause the trouble. (ToC) 4. GB/HZ/BIG5/PS Versions Related (ToC) 4.1 What Are Those GB, HZ, BIG5, PS Versions of FHY? ---------------------------------------------------- In the simplest term, GB is usually for jian ti zi (simplified char.) reading. HZ is for on-line jian ti zi reading. BIG5 is usually for fan ti zi (traditional char.) reading. PS is for laser printing and direct PS viewing. For reading purpose, you need only one of the above four versions. For subscribing purpose, you need only GB or HZ version. For quality printing purpose, you need PS version. (ToC) 4.2 I Was Told That It's a 'Mistake' to Make My Own FHY PS Version for Printing, Why Is It a 'Mistake'? ----------------------------------------------------------------------- It might be a bit exaggerated to call it a mistake. But there are good reasons for printing fhy ps version from the ftp site whenever you can. There is a fhy postscript (PS) version on fhy ftp site. FHY editors spend hours to make the good layout and add artistic flavors. FHY is proud of its PS version which combine artistic graphics with Chinese characters. For example, multiple fonts and sizes for characters are used; a graphic fhy cover is added; artistic graphics and even authors' signatures are included in some issues. The PS version you made by directly converting gb to ps with some gb2ps conversion program have all characters in one font and one size, no added graphics design etc. It's merely a raw ps version. You might think it saves your trouble to ftp a fhy ps file. However, after you compare two PS files you'll find the big difference and realize which one is worth printing (and photocopying for your friends). If being unable to access to FHY ftp site, readers can use CNPRINT to convert GB to PS. (ToC) 4.3 Why Can't I subscribe to FHY PS Version? --------------------------------------------- Due to the large size of PS file, we can't transmit it via email. You can only get it from our ftp sites. Again due to its large size, most ftp sites only store one current issue. (ToC) 5. FTP Related (ToC) 5.1 Where to Get the Published Issues of FHY? --------------------------------------------- ftp: uwalpha.uwinnipeg.ca 142.132.1.50 login name: ftp or anonymous password: your email address dir: pub/fcssc/fhy/ subdir: GB/ all issues HZ/ all issues BIG5/ all issues PS/ all issues HELP/ some help files INDEX/ table of contents of all issues in English, hz/gb/big5 courtesy of Liao Xinmeng maintainer Liao Xinmeng ftp: cnd.org 132.249.229.100 login name: ftp or anonymous password: your email address dir: pub/fcssc/fhy/ subdir: as above except there is only one current issue under PS dir courtesy of CND maintainer Wen Bing ftp: ftp.ifcss.org 128.123.1.55 login name: ftp or anonymous password: your email address dir: pub/org/fhy all issues of gb files courtesy of IFCSS maintainer Deng Dongping ftp: PV6F01.vincent.iastate.edu login name: anonymous.wangl (NOT anonymous; it's letter l, not digit 1) password: fhy or anything directory: fhy files: fhy##.PS.Z, fhy##.gb, fhy##.hz, fhy##.bg5 one current issue only courtesy of Zhan Kaijun maintainer Zhan Kaijun (ToC) 5.2 What Are Stored at FHY ftp Site? ------------------------------------ FHY GB versions: fhy01.gb, fhy02.gb, ... are stored under directory "GB". FHY HZ versions: fhy01.hz, fhy02.hz, ... are stored under directory "HZ". FHY BIG5 versions: fhy01.bg5, fhy02.bg5, ... are stored under directory "BIG5". FHY artistic PS versions: fhy01.ps.Z, fhy02.ps.Z, ..., in Unix .Z compressed form are stored under directory "PS". The artistic PS version is good for laser printing and ps viewing. Chinese table of contents of all issues: index.gb, index.bg5 are under FHY INDEX directory. (ToC) 5.3 How to Get the Published Issues of FHY? ------------------------------------------- Here is an ftp session on Unix: >ftp cnd.org Name: ftp or type "anonymous" Password: YourEmailAddress or just your login name ftp> cd pub/fcssc/fhy ftp> ls or dir ftp> cd GB ftp> bin set transmission mode to "binary" ftp> get fhy04.gb get one issue ftp> mget *.gb get all issues ftp> quit When download a file, set the transfer mode properly "bin" for .gb, .bg5, .Z "asc" for .hz, .ps, plain text (ToC) 5.4 How Come the FHY ftp Does Not Work for Me? ---------------------------------------------- It may be caused by machine backup, temporary shut down, too many users are accessing this ftp site, ... In any case, try an alternative FHY ftp. (ToC) 5.5 How Can I Get the Published Issues If I Don't Have ftp Access? ------------------------------------------------------------------ It's difficult now. We don't have ftp mail yet. You may check newsgroup: alt.chinese.text to see if the recent one or two still there. Otherwise, upon receiving your request the executive editors of the issue requested may send you one. In the long run, it's time for you to subscribe to FHY lists. So you won't miss any issue of your interest in the future. Or you may try FHY WWW and Gopher service. (ToC) 5.6 Can You Give Me Your Password and Login Name? I Failed to Login FHY FTP. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- You don't need my login name and password to access anonymous ftp sites in the world. When you access fhy ftp, at "login name" prompt, type "anonymous" or "ftp". Then at password prompt give your e-address as the password. It's a mistake to give your login name of your own system at "login name" prompt, because on our ftp machine no such a login name (user id) is defined. Not mention the non-existence of a password for an undefined login name. (ToC) 6. Reading FHY through Other Internet Means (ToC) 6.1 Can I Read FHY through WWW Service? --------------------------------------- Yes, quite a few WWW servers offer FHY files and here are some of them with URLs: http://uwalpha.uwinnipeg.ca:8001/fhyindex.html (GB) http://www.ifcss.org:8001/www/pub/org/fhy/index.html (GB) http://b.stat.purdue.edu:1280/fhy.html (Image GIF) (ToC) 6.2 Can I Read FHY through Gopher Service? ------------------------------------------ Yes, Host: sunrise.cc.mcgill.ca (HZ) IP: 132.206.35.10 Port: 70 Path: 1/magazine/fhy URL: gopher://sunrisesite.net/11/magazine/fhy (ToC) 6.3 Can I Read FHY Posted on Newsgroups under MS-Windows? ------------------------------------------ 6.3 Can I Read FHY Posted on Newsgroups under MS-Windows? Yes. The HZ version of FHY is posted on alt.chinese.text and some chinese.*.* newsgroups, BIG5 version on alt.chinese.text.big5. To read those files online under MS-Windows, you need either a Chinese system for Windows or a terminal software which supports HZ/BIG5. There is a demo version of Chinese system called TwinBridge which enables the display of GB/BIG5 codes under Windows. To read HZ coded files, WinHZ is another software you need beside TwinBridge. Start TwinBridge in GB mode first, then WinHZ (note: close them in reverse order). You are ready to edit/view GB/HZ files in Windows applications such as Notepad, Write, MS-Word, Windows' Terminal or other terminal softwares, and so on. In case you want to display BIG5 files only, change TwinBridge to BIG5 mode. Both softwares are available at: ftp.ifcss.org:/pub/software/ms-win/c-sys cnd-b.cnd.org:/pub/software/ms-win/c-sys SimpTerm is a terminal software for Windows which supports GB/BIG5/HZ codes, and it is available at: ftp.ifcss.org/pub/software/ms-win/networking/spterm08.exe cnd-b.cnd.org/pub/software/ms-win/networking/spterm08.exe (ToC) 7. Uudecoding Related (ToC) 7.1 Do I Need to Strip Off the Header Part Before Uudecoding? ------------------------------------------------------------- Many cm readers strip off the header or text ahead of the begin line begin 644 fhy15.gb then do uudecoding. This is unnecessary because all uudecoders are smart enough to detect the begin line. But none displays uudecoded file name. (ToC) 7.2 What Are the Common Problems with uudecoder? ------------------------------------------------ It complains: "no begin line". It's likely you deleted it. Or the file you are decoding is replied or forwarded from someone with "> " added in first two columns. Cure: delete these two columns, or anything before "M..." or "Y...". It complains: "file is too short". The last two lines of an uuencoded file should be ` end Many uuencoders gives a blank line above the "end" line. A few uudecoders complains about this. Cure: add a "`" (not "'"). (ToC) 7.3 What Can "uudz" Do More Than An Ordinary Uudecoder? ---------------------------------------------------------- FHY has a Unix shell script "uudz" that displays uudecoded file name and does much more. For details, get it from fhy ftp directory under HELP/. (ToC) 8. Decompress Related (ToC) 8.1 How to Uncompress fhy##.ps.Z? --------------------------------- On unix, issue "uncompress fhy##.ps.Z" (ToC) 8.2 How to Decompress A .gz File? --------------------------------- On Unix, issue "gunzip filename.gz".
